The Latest Recommendations on Treatment for Gout
Gout, the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood. Excessive uric acid levels can lead to chronic inflammation and damage the joints. The joints of the feet, especially the big toe, are the most commonly affected. The latest guidelines for treatment of gout recommends a focus on lowering uric acid levels in the bloodstream and using anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce joint pain. A podiatrist can diagnose gout and help you develop a treatment plan that works best for you. A podiatrist might also recommend simple lifestyle changes that you can make to manage your pain and may even reduce the likelihood of future gout flare ups. If you are afflicted with gout it is strongly recommended that you are under the care of a podiatrist.

What Is Gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.
People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.
Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Can Falling Be Prevented?
Research has indicated that as people naturally age, the risk of falling may increase. It may be a result of chronic health conditions, poor vision, and a loss of strength as the aging process occurs. There are methods that can be implemented which may help to reduce the chances of falling. These can consist of removing worn rugs, improving lighting in the living environment, and having routine physical examinations. This can be helpful in updating current medications which could be beneficial in eliminating existing dizziness. Additionally, many patients choose to have grab bars installed in the shower and bathroom areas, as this may provide additional support. If you would like more information about the effects falling may have on the feet, it is advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can guide you toward effective prevention techniques.
Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from Accent Podiatry Associates. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.
Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.
How to Prevent Falls
Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:
- Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
- Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
- Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
- Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
- Utilizing a walker or cane
- Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
- Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness
Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Achilles Tendon Ruptures
An Achilles tendon rupture occurs when the tendon on the back of the ankle is torn. Achilles tendon ruptures primarily occur during activities that involve pushing off of the ground or sprinting, like tennis and basketball. Some of the risk factors can include old age, poor flexibility, an inactive lifestyle, and steroid medications. Generally, most ruptures are not tied to a specific injury and are not indicated by pain before the rupture happens. A rupture is usually indicated by sudden pain that is said to be like getting kicked in the back of the leg, and a feeling or hearing of a pop in the tendon. If you have experienced an Achilles tendon rupture, be sure to consult with a podiatrist immediately. Surgery may be necessary, but it can be avoided with proper casting and physical therapy. Either way, it may take up to 6 months for a full recovery so it is imperative that you consult with a podiatrist.
Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Accent Podiatry Associates. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Is the Achilles Tendon?
The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.
What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?
There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.
Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms
- Inflammation
- Dull to severe pain
- Increased blood flow to the tendon
- Thickening of the tendon
Rupture Symptoms
- Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
- Total immobility
Treatment and Prevention
Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:
- Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
- Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

Managing Bunions
Bunions can be extremely painful and appear as a bony bump at the base of the big toe joint. They can make walking difficult since they are able to turn the affected foot outward. Some signs that indicate a bunion has developed may include swelling of the big toe joint, calluses under the joint, or limited motion of the big toe. Improperly fitting shoes, especially ones with a narrow or pointed toe box, are said to be one of the largest causes of bunions. Therefore, wearing shoes that fit properly, particularly ones that have extra toe room, are essential in bunion prevention. Bunions may also develop as a result of the shape of your foot, a foot deformity, or even a medical condition, such as arthritis. If you feel pain or stiffness in the big toe joint it is possible a bunion is developing, and it is recommended that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist for professional care and treatment.
If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact one of our podiatrists of Accent Podiatry Associates. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Is a Bunion?
Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.
Causes
- Genetics – some people inherit feet that are more prone to bunion development
- Inflammatory Conditions - rheumatoid arthritis and polio may cause bunion development
Symptoms
- Redness and inflammation
- Pain and tenderness
- Callus or corns on the bump
- Restricted motion in the big toe
In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.
