Causes of Blisters

If you see a bubble-like area filled with fluid on the foot, you are most likely experiencing a blister. Friction is the most common cause of this condition, but there may be several other reasons for this to occur. Exposure to certain chemicals, an infection from an insect bite, or being the victim of a severe burn may all be contributing factors for developing a blister. The fluid in the blister is produced by the human body to cover the damaged area and protect the skin. Blisters commonly develop on the toes and the back of the foot due to friction. This is most often caused by walking and running long distances, in addition to wearing shoes that are ill-fitting. If your foot is exposed to extremely cold temperatures, blisters may appear because of tissue damage caused by frostbite. Generally, blisters will heal on their own. However, if the blister should burst causing an infection, it’s advised to seek the medical attention of a podiatrist.

Foot Blisters

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How Do Blisters Form?

Does My Baby Have an Ingrown Toenail?

When a toe is affected by the nail pressing into the skin, this condition is referred to as an ingrown toenail. This condition affects not only grown adults, but children and babies as well. Your baby may cry when the big toe rubs against a shoe or sock, and the tender skin will often be painful. A blister may emerge, and if an infection occurs, the discharge will be yellowish in color if it breaks. To prevent this condition, it’s recommended to use a nail clipper instead of scissors, which allows the nail to be cut straight across. Babies' feet typically grow fast, so it’s crucial to check the fit of the shoes and socks often. A consultation with a podiatrist may be advised for treatment options, which may include administering an antibiotic and possibly trimming the nail away from the skin.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Stretching Helps the Feet Before Exercise

Stretching the feet before an exercise regimen is crucial in preventing foot injuries. To increase flexibility in the ankles, a resistance band is typically used. Stretches done on a step also work very well to loosen the heels. Rising up on the balls of the feet and holding the position for a few seconds will not only feel good, but also stretch the bottoms of the feet. Utilizing a tennis ball for stretching the foot is effective in flexing the tendons and ligaments. This is practiced by rolling the ball around with the sole of your foot to help stretch the arch, in addition to helping relieve tension.  Occasionally, pain experienced in the feet may come from the need to purchase different sized shoes. If the foot pain experienced is severe or lasts for several days, it is recommended to see a podiatrist to get a proper diagnosis.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

How to Treat Corns

When the skin on the foot rubs against a shoe, there is a chance a corn will develop. Typically, the pressure from this causes the skin to thicken; this may produce extreme pain, affecting the deeper layers of the skin. Hard corns are generally caused by poorly fitted shoes and may develop on the top of the toes. Corns that affect the area in between the toes are referred to as soft corns, and moisture from the toes may be the underlying reason for this condition. Occasionally, corns may develop on the soles of the feet, most likely caused by running or walking. There may be several treatment options available, including having a podiatrist trim the corn down, which will ease the pressure.
